Jodrell Bank

On 14th December, the youth board visited the Jodrell Bank Observatory in Macclesfield, part of the University of Manchester the home to many radio telescopes, including the enormous Lovell Telescope that stands 80 metres high and 76 metres across the bowl. In the Jodrell Bank Discovery Centre, we learned about what the telescopes did (detect radio emissions from distant galaxies and stars) and how they do it (by reflecting radio waves off of the dish into the tip and into the base, where they are amplified and detected). It was a good day out, but a little bit cold for my taste. Our first meeting of 2014 will be on Saturday 11th January, so, at the latest, look out for a new post at that date.
